April 2024 - Experimental Film - “Voyage”

Experimentation has always been a part of my practice. Trying new things can teach you new skills and open up new opportunities. For the past year, I have been shooting a lot of footage around the idea of making films from photographs. Primarily this has led me to the technique of timelapse photography, as I have been struggling to find a way to express the problems and joys of moving about the city of Phoenix, where I have been living. Very quickly, as these things tend to do, the project got out of hand quickly. But, also as I often find, this can lead to good outcomes. I gained a colleague and friend, the composer Wyoming Toad, and have learned some things about new camera techniques and how to stitch together a short film in the form of montage. I have always been interested in cinema, and I seem to have finally been able to execute a first semblance of an idea here that merges filmmaking with my broader sociological concerns about climate change, politics, middle-class ideology, and consumption. The result is a first experimental short film adventure, titled “Voyage.”
